My talk will have two main parts. In the first, I will summarise the philosophical background for my study of human and artificial intelligence, in particular in the relationship between (artificial) intelligence, visual representation and perception, and human creativity. I will emphasise how art is a distinctive fundamental trait of humans, which helps understand the higher levels of intelligence attained when compared to other species.
In the second part, I will present some research projects where the disciplines of the visual art, perception, computer vision and graphics, and robotics can be brought together to study in some depth how the human functions, as well as offer new creative possibilities.
Bio-Sketch

I started my university education in Montreal (UdeM & McGill at the Centre for Intelligent Machines), before working as a research engineer in Paris (in Geo. Info. Systems). From 1998 to 2004 I was at Brown University where, during my PhD studies, I co-founded the SHAPE Laboratory, devoted to the study of digital modeling with applications to archaeology and cultural heritage. In 2004, I crossed the Atlantic once again and joined Goldsmiths, University of London.
I am an entrepreneur. Besides seeding research ideas, projects, collaborations, I have initiated high-tech start-ups: London Geometry (2011), DynAikon (2015), and I keep collaborating or helping with new ones, such as Brarista (since 2019). Together with William Latham, we launched (in 2014) and manage the Creative Machine series of exhibitions and joint symposia, most recently on show in Wuhan, China (our 6th such events): https://www.creativemachine.io/
